The First Pitch: Things To Know
- A three-game rivalry series is on deck for the Utah baseball team as the Utes make the drive south to Provo to meet the BYU Cougars. Though the Utes dropped a heartbreaker in the teams' midweek non-conference matchup earlier this year, Utah did take two of three in last year's Big 12 series between the clubs.
- The Utes' bats continue to rank among the best in the Big 12 as the team brings a .307 average into the BYU series—ranking fourth in the conference and top-25 nationally. In league games that tally rises to .314.
- Offensively, Utah has been headlined by left fielder Jake Long who has hit safely in 31 of the Utes' last 34 games (since Feb. 22). He is tied for the team lead with a .364 average, also holding team-bests in slugging (.624), RBIs (49), home runs (9) and total bases (103). Long's 49 RBIs place him eighth in the Big 12.
- Long hit for the cycle in a rubber game victory over Kansas State on March 29, a highlight of a 21-game hitting streak for Long. It was the third cycle by a Utah player in recorded program history.
- In addition, Cal Miller (13th; .364) and Cameron Gurney (15th; .362) join Long in the Big 12's top-15 for batting average.
- Gurney hit .417 in last year's series against the Cougars, going 5-for-12 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored.
- Utah has picked up in-conference series wins this season over Arizona, Kansas State and Texas Tech—the latter a sweep over the Red Raiders. The Utes' sweep over Texas Tech brought the club to nine wins in Big 12 play, already surpassing the team's conference win total from last season.
- The sweep of Texas Tech saw Utah outscore the Red Raiders by a combined 28-8 tally. Tech entered the series at Utah hitting a Big 12-leading .355 and scoring 10 runs per game--both second in the nation--and had been held under four runs just once in conference play. The Utah pitching staff stood tall and held the Red Raiders to a .271 clip for the weekend, along with three runs in both the series opener and finale, plus two in the middle game that Utah won by run rule.
- Freshman Cal Miller, a Davis County native from Centerville, Utah, was named Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week last Monday. Miller batted .400 in the Texas Tech series with two home runs, including a 4-for-7 clip with runners on base.
- Following the series with BYU, the Utes will return home to America First Ballpark for a Tuesday, May 5 duel against Utah Valley.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
April 27, 1990 – Salt Lake City native Craig Sudbury no-hits New Mexico in a 2-1, seven-inning victory at Derks Field. The Lobos' only run came in the first inning after Sudbury hit the leadoff batter. The run was ultimately unearned.
