LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Mia Gomez has been named to the 2026 NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 list, it was announced on Thursday.
Gomez has earned this selection by putting together an exemplary first season at Utah that started with her reaching base in her first 36 games, setting a new school record for the longest on-base streak in program history. She leads the team in several offensive categories, including batting average, hits, total bases and multi-RBI games and she's tied for the team lead in homers. Gomez's 13 two-out RBI hits are also tops on the roster. Her 56 knocks put her in the top 10 in the Big 12 and her list of accolades include taking home a Big 12 Freshman of the Week award on Feb. 17.
This is the third time a Utah player has been named to this Top 25 list, which was released for the first time in 2014. One of the players on that initial list was Utah's Hannah Flippen and Alyssa Barrera was named a finalist in 2016.
The list of 25 was selected by the NFCA. The top 10, top three and winner are voted by the NFCA Division I All-America Committee. To be eligible, student-athletes must be nominated by their member head coach and in their first year of NCAA Division I collegiate competition as a true freshman or redshirt freshman. Nominated student-athletes remain in consideration for Top-10 selection.
The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes. The NFCA awards Freshman of the Year plaudits to a student-athlete from NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and NAIA. For more information about all NFCA Awards, visit nfca.org.
