The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Utah welcomes the UCF Knights to America First Ballpark for a three-game series and the teams' first meeting since February 2004. All-time the Utes trail the all-time series with UCF 1-2, winning an extra-innings affair to finish off that three-game set in Orlando.
- The Utes won their Tuesday meeting against UVU, taking a 16-9 contest that was propelled by two six-run innings. With everyone in Utah's starting lineup getting at least one hit, the team combined for 17 hits--the seventh time this season the Utes had 15 or more in a game.
- Instrumental in the win was two-out hitting, which saw the Utes go 11-for-17 in those situations and total a season-high 12 two-out RBIs.
- Gary Henderson's club is also coming off a three-game conference sweep of Texas Tech last weekend that saw Utah outscore the Red Raiders by a combined 28-8. It was Utah's first sweep as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
- Tech entered the series at Utah hitting a Big 12-leading .355 and scoring 10 runs per game--both second in the nation--and had been held under four runs just once in conference play. The Utah pitching staff stood tall and held the Red Raiders to a .271 clip for the weekend, along with three runs in both the series opener and finale, plus two in the middle game that Utah won by run rule.
- Freshman Cal Miller, a Davis County native from Centerville, Utah, was named Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week on Monday. Miller batted .400 in the Texas Tech series with two home runs, including a 4-for-7 clip with runners on base.
- Entering this weekend, Utah's .314 team batting average ranks fourth in the Big 12. That tally rises to .329 in conference play, narrowly behind Kansas State (.330) for the league lead.
- Utah and Texas Tech are the only teams in the Big 12 to have three players in the league's top 10 for batting average. It includes Jake Long (6th; .379), Cameron Gurney (7th; .376) and Jet Gilliam (10th; .369). Long has enjoyed an incredible climb this year after hitting .268 a year ago.
- Utah has enjoyed being at home during its inaugural season playing at America First Ballpark. The Utes are 13-3 at home and have won six straight in Salt Lake City. When playing at home, Gurney (.476) and Long (.435) are each hitting over .430 and contributing to a team-wide clip of .348.
