SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team picked up its third straight shutout on Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Grand Canyon on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
Â
Utah has not had three straight shutout victories since at least 1987. In the meantime, the Utes had a three-game stretch during February 1993 when the team allowed just one run over a three-game stretch against Mesa State and UNLV.
Â
Dating back to this past Monday at Loyola Marymount, Utah has not allowed a run in 32 consecutive innings.
Â
Justin Abercrombie (1-1) made his second start as a Utah Ute and put up a five-inning start as he scattered six hits with one strikeout against the Lopes.
Dylan Gazaway came on to begin the sixth inning and took the squad home from there to earn his first save of the season. Gazaway fanned four in his outing as the pair combined for no walks—something that hadn't happened for the Utah pitching staff since 2024.
Â
Six players in the Utah lineup contributed 10 hits, led by
Jake Long's 3-for-4 performance as he scored three times and finished a triple short of the cycle.
Jet Gilliam and
Jack Kleveno bookended the lineup with multi-hit efforts, with Kleveno driving in a pair of runs.
Â
A two-out rally for the Utes netted the game's first two runs in the second inning. Long laced a double that put
Cal Miller on third base, then
Matt Flaharty was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kleveno then dialed up a double to right center as Long and Miller came home for the early 2-0 lead.
Â
Abercrombie tossed a 1-2-3 third inning and got some help from his defense to keep the two-run pad. After a leadoff single in the fifth, he induced a fly ball followed by a line drive to
Daniel Arambula at third base. Arambula made the snow cone catch then fired across the diamond to
Cameron Gurney for the inning-ending double play.
Â
Gazaway came on from the bullpen as the sixth inning got underway and set the tone with a strikeout, ultimately going 12 up, 12 down for the save.
Â
Utah added some insurance in the home half of the sixth when Gilliam put a two-out single into right field as Long came in from second base.
Â
Then in the eighth, Long put an exclamation point on the victory with a 395-foot solo shot over the right field fence. His day at the plate extended Long's hitting streak to eight straight games. He has reached base safely in 10 straight contests.
