SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a three-hit day from
Mia Gomez, the University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of a 4-2 final against the No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowgirls in Big 12 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This defeat drops Utah to 25-11 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12.
Both teams got on the board in the second inning, OSU on an Audrey Schneidmiller sacrifice fly, Utah thanks to a
Cian Noli solo blast to left. The Cowgirls immediately broke that tie in third thanks to three consecutive singles, the last one by Karli Godwin sending Tia Warsop across.
In the fourth,
Payton Crank struck back for the Utes by lacing a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence to level the score at 2-2. That score stayed frozen through the fifth thanks to the work of pitchers
Hailey Maestretti and Ruby Meylan, both of whom were pitching in their third game in three days.
Unfortunately for the Utes, it was Oklahoma State that broke the tie. An RBI double off the bat of Lexi McDonald and a bases-loaded walk to Warsop in the sixth staked them to a 4-2 to lead and Meylan held that edge for the last two innings. The Utes did bring the tying run to the plate in each of the last two frames, but were unable to get that run home.
