SALT LAKE CITY –
Hailee White and
Mia Gomez both logged two hits and two RBIs, but the University of Utah softball team dropped a 9-8 slugfest to the No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Saturday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah's record now stands at 25-10 and 4-4 in the Big 12.
The Cowgirls were the first team to dent home plate, doing so in the top of the first on an RBI double by Claire Timm, but Utah responded in a big way. After a pair of singles started their half of the first,
Kayla Lyon peppered the left field fence with an RBI double. A perfectly placed bunt by White allowed
Danika Wilson to scamper home with the second run of the inning and
Kennedy Proctor made the score 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Utah's rally continued with singles from
Cian Noli and
Payton Crank, the latter of which pushed across the inning's fourth run and Gomez provided one more big blow with a two-run double to left, her second safety of the stanza.
Unfortunately for Utah, the Cowgirls quickly went to work eliminating their deficit. They scored three times in the third and added three more in the fourth to move in front by one. Utah immediately drew level thanks to an RBI single by White in the bottom of the fourth, but OSU responded with another run to take an 8-7 lead in the fifth.
Wilson came through for Utah with a clutch, game-tying RBI knock in the bottom of the fifth, only for an RBI double by Amanda Hasler to give OSU the lead for good in the sixth. Unfortunately for the Utes, they were unable to mount one more uprising to knot the score again.
