SALT LAKE CITY - Shannon Davidson knocked in a pair of goals and
Ali Swensen contributed two assists to help lead the University of Utah women's soccer team to a 4-0 exhibition victory over the Westminster Griffins on Thursday evening in front of 604 fans at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
"It was great to play in front of our amazing fans tonight," said coach
Hideki Nakada. "After a disappointing result on Monday, our focus was to be more clinical in front of goal. It took us a little longer than I would have liked, but, as the game wore on, we got better and finished some fantastic team goals.
"It was great for
Shannon Davidson to score a brace and for
Sophie Bellini and
Lilliah Blum, who each added terrific goals that were beautifully set up by teammates. We're looking forward to a great match at Utah State next week."
Davidson got the scoring started early for the home side when she accepted a perfect pass from
Katie Callaway inside the 18-yard box and sent a left-footed shot past the keeper in the 12th minute. In goal,
Emeline McClenahan kept that lead intact by stopping both shots that came her way the Utes took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, Utah's attack went back to work and their first tally of the period came in the 61st minute. A pass from
Grace Watkins sent
Kelly Bullock on a run down the right side. Her cross found Swensen, who flicked the ball on to
Lilliah Blum and Blum's shot was on target to make the score 2-0.
Davidson completed her brace in the 83rd minute when she intercepted an errant Westminster pass at the top of the box, found a shooting lane and pocketed her second score of the night with another left-footed effort. Less than a minute later,
Londyn Lovell's through ball set up a Swensen cross to
Sophie Bellini at the top of the six-yard box and Bellini easily converted it into Utah's final tally of the evening. This also gave Swensen her second assist of the match.
Utah's defense completely neutralized the Griffins' attack over the last 45 minutes, holding them without a single shot on goal.
