OREM, Utah – Kelly Bullock set a new career-high with six total shots, but the University of Utah women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to the Utah Valley Wolverines on Monday night at UCCU Stadium in Orem, Utah.
Utah is now 1-1 in 2025.
"First," said coach
Hideki Nakada, "congratulations to UVU on their impressive new stadium. What an incredible environment and atmosphere we got to compete in tonight.
"Obviously, the result is disappointing. It's hard to believe we came away without a goal or the win given how much we controlled the game, dominated possession and created quality chances. Full credit to their goalkeeper. She put in one of the best performances I've seen in a long time and especially won them the game."
The Utes spent the first 45 minutes putting constant pressure on the Wolverine defense, firing off 16 shots compared to eight by the home squad, but still found themselves trailing by a pair at the break. Utah's first opportunity came in the game's opening minute, but a
Grace Watkins shot was turned away and UVU capitalized on the counter to open the scoring.
The Wolverines added another tally in the 15th minute and despite several excellent Utah scoring chances, including a header off the woodwork by
Lilliah Blum in the 33rd minute, the Utes couldn't cut into their deficit before halftime.
Utah continued pushing to get on the board in the second half, with Bullock and Blum producing on-target efforts in the opening minutes.
Erin Gibbs also made three second-period stops to keep the visitors within striking distance and the Utes produced 12 total shots over the final 45 minutes, but were unable to find a goal.
The night ended with Utah holding a 28-15 edge in total shots and they led 11-6 in on-target tries. Blum and Watkins both matched Bullock's number with six shots. Gibbs totaled five saves.
"It is early in the season and we'll continue to learn and grow," said Nakada. "We're excited to be back home Thursday night and look forward to playing in front of our fans."
