SALT LAKE CITY – A nine-run ninth inning for TCU turned the tables as the Utah baseball team was defeated 13-5 in the teams' series opener Thursday night at Smith's Ballpark.
The Utes led 5-4 after eight innings and finished with 15 hits—two short of a season-high for a conference game. But the TCU bats heated up in the final frame, stringing together seven hits on the way to the nine-run inning.
Eight Utes had at least one hit in the game and there were four multi-hit performances, led by 3-for-5 nights for
Core Jackson,
Tyler Quinn and
Matt Flaharty. Jackson, Quinn and
Santino Panaro doubled in the game while Jackson scored two runs. Quinn extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 11 straight games.
Starting pitcher
Colter McAnelly left in line for the win after a seven-inning start with four runs allowed on eight hits and three walks. McAnelly struck out two batters, bringing his strikeout total for the season to 92—it ranks fourth-most in recorded Utah history.
TCU got off to a quick start with a run in each of the first two innings, but the Utes made quick work to even things up.
Derek Smith singled and Panaro doubled to right field, giving Utah runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning. The two-out rally continued when Flaharty laced a first-pitch single to center, scoring both runners and leveling the score at two-all.
An error by the Horned Frogs allowed Jackson to score in the home half of the third, bringing the Utes back within 4-3 after TCU plated a pair in the top of the inning.
McAnelly worked around a walk in the fourth and dealt a 1-2-3 fifth, setting the stage for an RBI double from Quinn plus an RBI single from
Kaden Carpenter as Utah led 5-4 after five innings of play. McAnelly retired the Horned Frogs in order in the sixth and allowed only a two-out walk in the seventh, closing his book with a fly ball to shallow left-center.
The Utes had a chance in the sixth to add some insurance with a runner at second and one out, but a double play ended the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Utah got a strikeout after the visitors loaded the bases with nobody out. But TCU strung together five more hits and three walks on the way to taking the series opener.
