SALT LAKE CITY –
Matt Flaharty hit his first home run of the season and
Lucas Boesen highlighted the pitching staff as the Utah baseball team got back in the win column, taking down Utah Valley 8-2 on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
It was the final home non-conference game of the season for the Utes and gave the club a two- game sweep of its season series against UVU. There was rain along the Wasatch Front on Monday night and into mid-morning Tuesday, but the grounds crew had the field ready to go and the Sun came out just in time for batting practice in the afternoon.
UVU was first on the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the second inning, but the home club plated the final eight runs of the night thanks to seven different players contributing a hit.
Austen Roellig,
Kaden Carpenter and
Jake Long had two hits apiece.
Core Jackson had a double and scored twice, while Flaharty's long ball gave him three RBI for the night.
Lucas Boesen (4-2) got the starting nod on the mound, delivering his longest outing at Utah with a five-inning performance. He struck out four Wolverines and walked none, allowing two runs on five hits.
He handed the keys to
Ian Culver as the sixth inning got underway, before Culver tossed three innings with just a pair of hits and two walks allowed against two strikeouts. Then
Mateus Conaway closed the door in the ninth. Only once all night did UVU put the leadoff batter aboard; it was on a fielding error in the ninth inning.
Boesen got the Utes off on the right foot with a 1-2-3 first inning and was unfazed by the UVU home run in the second inning. He answered with a strikeout to get Utah back to the bats.
Three singles for Utah brought the Utes back within a run in the home half of the second. Carpenter led off the bottom of the second with a base hit to left field, then crossed the plate on a pair of two-out singles from Long and
Derek Smith.
Utah plated a pair in the third after loading the bases on a Roellig single plus a hit batsman and a walk.
Drake Digiorno was then hit by a pitch, forcing Roellig home. Then a passed ball during
Cameron Gurney's at bat allowed
Tyler Quinn to come home from third base and put the Utes ahead 3-2.
Gurney walked to load the bases again with one out, but an infield fly and a strikeout ended the inning.
In the fourth, Jackson walked with two outs and got all the way to third base after a pickoff throw got away. Carpenter then reached on an infield single as Jackson scored to swell the Utah lead to 4-2.
Boesen worked around a hit batsman and single in the fifth to wrap up his outing and exit the game in line for the win.
The Utes made quick work in the bottom of the fifth to tack on some more insurance. Long laced a one-out single and Smith walked, setting the stage for Flaharty to club a 1-2 pitch onto the berm in right field.
After a UVU pitching change, Jackson legged out a double through the right side and scored on an ensuing base hit from Quinn to bring the game to an 8-2 score.
Culver was faced with two-out baserunners in the sixth and seventh innings but got a pair of fly ball outs to end the UVU threats. The Wolverines got a runner as far as third base in the eighth; a grounder with two outs easily got Utah out of the inning.
Quinn hit safely for the sixth straight game and Carpenter has now reached safely in his last 10 contests.
