This Weekend's Fan Experience Rundown
- Once again throughout the 2025 season, parking on Utah Baseball gamedays is free at Smith's Ballpark. Park in the lot on 13th South, directly North of home plate. Fans can also ride TRAX for free with a valid game ticket or University of Utah UCard—just hop on the Red, Blue or Green Lines to Ballpark Station.
- University of Utah students are always admitted to baseball games free of charge—just claim your ticket online at utahtickets.com/MUSS.
- The TCU series opener will be Throwback Thursday. Visit the marketing table behind home plate to pick up a throwback poster and enjoy some retro-themed elements around the ballpark.
- The final Friday Snack Shack of the season takes place in the middle game; visit the marketing table to claim a voucher for a free or discounted item at the concession stand. In addition, the Utes will celebrate an early Father's Day as the team's seniors will each catch a ceremonial first pitch from their fathers.
- Saturday is Senior Day—be in your seats early as the Utah baseball program recognizes its eight-man Class of 2025. It includes Mateus Conaway, Drake Digiorno, Jackson Elder, Core Jackson, Brady Joyner, Bransen Kuehl, Santino Panaro and Tyler Quinn. The senior recognition begins at approximately 1:35 p.m. Following that, the seniors will catch a ceremonial first pitch from their mothers.
- Nostalgia mode will be in full effect all weekend as it's the last scheduled games for Utah at Smith's Ballpark. To mark the close of this chapter of program history, visit the marketing table on Saturday to pick up a commemorative paper ticket.
- Weather permitting, postgame on Saturday everyone is invited to walk the warning track on the field and reminisce on memories of not just Smith's Ballpark, but also Derks Field and Community Park which formerly stood on the same site. Shortly after the game, please meet at the bottom of sections 6 and 7 (first base side, just past the Utah dugout). Ballpark staff will be on hand to guide fans onto the warning track.
The First Pitch: Things to Know
A historic series with much on the line awaits the Utah baseball team this weekend as the Utes host Big 12 foe TCU inside Smith's Ballpark from Thursday through Saturday. The Utes are looking not only to send off Smith's Ballpark on a high note; the team is still in contention for a spot in next week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship.
- Though Utah dropped a midweek non-conference game at BYU on Tuesday, the Utes are looking to keep rolling in league play after a road series win last weekend against a ranked Arizona club. Core Jackson hit .400 in that series with two home runs, six RBIs, seven runs scored and five walks while Jackson also pulled off a straight steal of home. Austen Roellig also had a great weekend in Tucson, turning in a team-leading .429 clip with two doubles.
- On the mound, the Utes enjoyed two quality starts from Colter McAnelly and Merit Jones on the way to winning the first two games in the series. McAnelly's five strikeouts brought him to 90 on the season; it ranks fourth-most for a season in Utah history.
- Jackson, a member of the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, continues to headline the Utah offense. He has hit .358 over his two seasons as a Utah Ute with 31 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs and 84 RBIs. He leads the team this season in batting average (.353), slugging (.637), OBP (.441), runs scored (57), RBIs (43), doubles (16) and home runs (12).
- Utah as a team has tallied 110 doubles this season; broken down per game (2.34) the Utes rank second in the Big 12.
- Jackson and Friday night ace Colter McAnelly were once again included in the latest D1Baseball.com position breakdowns. Jackson was listed as the No. 10 shortstop in the country and best in the Big 12, while the sophomore right-hander McAnelly was tabbed the No. 47 starter nationally.
- Utah and TCU are familiar foes having spent time together in the Mountain West Conference (2006-11) and WAC (1997-99). The last time these clubs met was in the 2011 MWC Tournament; Utah defeated the Horned Frogs twice in the 2009 conference tournament on the way to a league title and NCAA Regional berth.
- With this series marking the end of Utah's time at Smith's Ballpark, it will close a chapter that dates back to the 1990s. The Utes have called the facility their primary home since 1996 but the first college baseball game here was played in April 1994; it was an extra-innings win for Utah over in-state rival BYU.
- Utah also won the 2016 Pac-12 Championship inside Smith's Ballpark. In the days before the Pac-12 held a conference tournament, the regular season conference champion received the league's automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament. Despite being picked last in the Pac-12 Preseason Poll and starting that season 4-11, the Utes banded together down the stretch and were in a position to play for the Pac-12 title the last week of the season against Washington. A win in the middle game guaranteed Utah at least a share of the championship, then a 21-7 victory in the series finale secured the outright title and regional berth for Utah. A combined crowd of 12,302 watched that series, including 6,071 for the finale.
- College and professional baseball has been played at the corner of 13th South and West Temple for nearly 100 years. Community Park was the original facility that stood on the site, opening in 1928. It was renamed Derks Field in honor of Salt Lake Tribune sports editor John Derks.
- In the Fall of 1946, the original Derks Field was destroyed by arson. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1947, playing host to baseball, soccer, boxing and football among other events over the years. Derks Field was closed in 1993 to make way for Smith's Ballpark, which opened in 1994.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
May 13, 2016 – The Utes win a 9-7 series opener over Stanford inside Smith's Ballpark. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Jayson Rose got the win on the mound and Dylan Drachler picked up a two-inning save. Utah eventually won the series via rubber game and took the Pac-12 Championship later in the year.
