SALT LAKE CITY – Utah put the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell by a 2-0 score to No. 23-ranked Kansas in a pitchers' duel on Friday night inside Smith's Ballpark.
With Utah looking to pull even in the final frame,
Drake Digiorno beat out a bang-bang play at first base for a two-out single. He later got as far as third after a base hit from
Santino Panaro. But Kansas made a pitching change and would secure the final out of the ballgame.
The game remained scoreless into the seventh inning before Kansas broke the ice with a solo homer to lead off the frame. An insurance run for the Jayhawks came on an RBI double in the eighth and brought the game to its final score.
Despite the setback for Utah, it was another quality start from sophomore
Colter McAnelly (3-4). The right-hander struck out seven Jayhawks in his eight innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks.
Dylan Gazaway came on for the top of the ninth and recorded two strikeouts.
In a game that featured solid pitching on both sides, baserunners came at a premium.
Austen Roellig and Digiorno each went 2-for-4 while
Kaden Carpenter and Panaro had a single apiece.
Cameron Gurney and
Jake Long each reached via a hit-by-pitch as well.
McAnelly quickly erased a one-out walk in the first inning with a 6-4-3 double play, before working around a baserunner in each of the next two frames. Kansas would get men into scoring position in the top of the fourth, but McAnelly fanned Tommy Barth on five pitches to end the threat.
Looking to get on the board first, Utah loaded the bases in its half of the fourth inning, but a grounder in the infield brought the frame to a close as the game remained scoreless.
Kansas starter Dominic Voegele went 8.2 innings and struck out five batters while walking none.
