SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team (21-8) slugged its way to a 14-10 victory at Smith's Ballpark on Friday afternoon, defeating the CSUN Matadors in the first game of a three-game non-conference series.
The day was highlighted by two program records that were reset by a pair of Utah natives. Center fielder
Kai Roberts (Lehi) tallied two stolen bases to register 53 in his career, passing Kody Davis (2012-16) and Corey Shimada (2006-09) for the most by a Ute. Then in the ninth, southpaw
Micah Ashman (Sandy) came on for what became Ashman's program-record-setting 18
th collegiate save. He surpassed Tyler Wagner, who closed out 17 games from 2010-12.
A highlight day at the plate for
Landon Frei keyed the offense as Frei tallied a 4-for-4 day with a three-run homer, a walk, two runs scored and six RBI. Making his first start in left field, the Santa Clara, Utah native had both the most RBI in his collegiate career as well as the most by a Ute this season.
Eight Utes combined for 15 hits, with Frei going yard as well as
Hunter Antillon.
TJ Clarkson singled twice, scored three times and drove in a run to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games, while
Drake Digiorno also scored three runs and has reached safely in his last 18 games played.
Bryson Van Sickle (1-0) earned the win for the Utes after a six-inning start. The southpaw bounced back after giving up three runs in the first inning. He struck out two before handing off to
Randon Hostert to begin the seventh inning.
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola came on in the ninth and Ashman finished off the final two outs.
The Matadors scored first by dropping three runs in the top of the first inning to gain a quick lead. After two quick outs in the home half of the inning, the Utes took advantage of two CSUN errors to set the stage for a Frei RBI single, tying the score at 3-3. CSUN responded quickly with a run of their own in the top of the second inning and gained a one-run lead.
A crooked number went up for the Utes in the third inning as three consecutive batters reached to start the inning. Clarkson scored Digiorno after his leadoff single to tie the game at four-apiece. Frei kept the bats hot with a three-run homer to left field that sailed 414 feet and
Core Jackson capped the five-run, five-hit inning with an RBI single to give Utah an 8-4 advantage.
CSUN stayed in the game with another pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Utes' lead to just two. However, Utah refused to quiet down, plating three more runs in the bottom half with two more RBI coming from Frei.
Bruer Webster joined the hit party with a run-scoring single of his own.
After a 1-2-3 fifth for Van Sickle on the mound, Roberts led off the home half with a walk and later stole second base for his 52
nd career swipe, tying the all-time program record.
The Matadors hit a solo home run in the top frame of the sixth inning but Antillon got that run back, plus another with a two-run homer to left field to give Utah a 14-7 advantage.
CSUN added two runs in the ninth inning and had runners at first and second with one out. Now a save situation, Ashman entered from the bullpen and slammed the door to retire his two batters faced. Roberts was there in center field to track down a fly ball, before a grounder to Jackson at shortstop brought the ballgame to an end and gave Ashman the saves record.
