The First Pitch: Things to Know
After a road series win at California this past weekend, it's a quick turnaround for the Utah Baseball team as the Utes begin another five-game home stand on Tuesday when Utah Tech makes the trip up from St. George. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. MT inside Smith's Ballpark.
- Utah has won five of its last six games dating back to the Oregon State series finale on March 17. The Utes swept a midweek doubleheader last Tuesday and Wednesday vs. Northern Colorado, then took two in the team's trip to Berkeley over the weekend.
- It was Utah's first series win over California since the 2017 season and put the club into a tie for third place in the Pac-12 standings with a 5-4 record in league play.
- Merit Jones and Bryson Van Sickle each worked seven innings in their starts on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Jones picked up the win in the opener after Utah broke a 3-3 tie with a four-spot in the eighth; it was his longest outing as a Ute. Van Sickle received a no-decision but did not walk anyone in his start.
- Bransen Kuehl was Sunday's winner on the bump, setting the stage for Jaden Harris and Micah Ashman to close the door. Ashman, a NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List member, picked up his Pac-12-leading sixth save of the season and 15th as a Ute; the latter is just two away from tying the program's career record.
- The pitching staff combined for just five walks on the weekend and allowed one in Sunday's rubber game. The group's combined ERA of 4.34 ranks second in the Pac-12, as well as walks allowed per nine innings (3.26).
- At the plate, Drake Digiorno continued to swing the bat well against the Golden Bears after contributing a walk-off double in the finale against Northern Colorado. Digiorno hit a team-leading .385 in the series with a homer in the rubber game, while Kai Roberts and TJ Clarkson each contributed a long ball on the weekend as well. Roberts walked four times in the series.
- Roberts continues to show incredible strides from his junior season, heading into the week with a team-best .367 batting average—ranking sixth in the Pac-12 and exactly 100 points above where Roberts finished the 2023 campaign. It's the highest average Roberts has posted as a Ute and includes a Pac-12-leading 10 doubles, which rank 30th nationally.
- Roberts finished the Cal series with 14 stolen bases on the season; it leads the Pac-12 and ranks 11th across the country. Roberts has 47 stolen bases in his career and needs five more to tie the program career record.
- The Utes have been more aggressive on the basepaths this season and the numbers show: Utah's 46 stolen bases lead the league and are on pace to surpass last year's total (62 stolen bases).
- Following Tuesday's battle with the Trailblazers, Utah will prepare for another Pac-12 Conference series, this time hosting Stanford from Thursday through Saturday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. MT in the series opener, with Friday and Saturday's games set for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m.
