SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball split its matches on the first day of the Utah Classic, downing Tennessee State in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) before dropping a five-set marathon match to UC Santa Barbara (25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-17, 20-22) on Friday night.
Utah 3, Tennessee State 0
Utah opened the first match of the Utah Classic playing from behind after trailing Tennessee State 14-10 as the midway point of the first set arrived. A kill from
Kamryn Gibadlo stopped the run and started what led to a 7-1 run for the Utes. Leading 17-15, Utah gave up a kill to the Tigers to cut the lead to one point, but Utah countered with three consecutive points to take a 20-16 advantage and force a timeout.
Out of the break, the two teams went point for point until another kill from Gibadlo followed by a Tiger attack error gave Utah the 25-20 win in the opening set. Five Utes recorded at least two kills with Gibadlo leading the way after tallying four kills on .500 hitting.
In the second set, Utah jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but later saw Tennessee State cut the gap to just 10-9 in Utah's favor. Later leading 14-13, Utah used a 8-1 run to push ahead 22-14. Despite the Tigers scoring five of the next six points, Utah recorded kills from
Kamry Bailey and
Amelia Van Der Werff to end the set 25-19. Bailey totaled seven kills in the second set to lead the offense behind
Viktoria Wahlgren's 13 assists in the frame.
After going back and forth early on in the third set, the Utes pulled away from a 9-1 run to lead 13-7. Utah extended the lead to eight points later on in the set and were able to hold onto the lead thanks to hot-hitting around the team and go on to win convincingly, 25-16. The Utes hit .357 in the third set, while limiting Tennessee State to a .133 hitting percentage.
Gibadlo led the team with 10 kills on .316 hitting for her fourth-straight match of double-digit kills.

Utah 2, UC Santa Barbara 3
Utah got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead behind four blocks right away to set the tone early. Later leading 10-4, the Utes let the lead slip as UC Santa Barbara battled back to even the score from six consecutive points. Utah countered with a 5-0 run to push back ahead 15-10.
Later on, four-straight points from Utah extended the lead to 21-12, and despite a last minute effort to comeback from the Gauchos, the Utes would wrap up the first set with a 25-19 win. Bailey posted five kills on .625 in the opening set, while Satuala added five blocks and Ramirez tallied five digs to lead the group.
Little separation between the teams defined the start of the second set until the Utes rattled off a 5-0 run, taking a 15-11 lead. Although the spurt of momentum, the Utes then gave up five points in a row to the Gauchos to trail 16-15 and call timeout. From there, the teams went back and forth until UCSB put together a 5-1 run to lead 23-19. A Gaucho service error and kill from Gibadlo cut the score to just 23-21, but the Gauchos managed to finish off the set 25-22 and tie the match.
Utah fell behind 12-7 in the third set and cut the deficit to just three points after a block from Satuala and kill from Jardine. The momentum was stopped there and the Utes couldn't manage to climb back in the set more than that as UCSB went on to extend the lead to as many as seven points as the frame came to a close. Utah eventually fell 25-17 in the third set to trail 2-1 in the match.
The Utes dropped into a 5-1 hole to start the fourth set, but flipped the script on the Gauchos to later lead 11-9 and force UCSB to call a timeout. The Gauchos scored out of the break, but Utah went on a 10-1 run to break open the set and take a commanding 21-11 lead. Utah finished off the frame with a 25-17 victory to force a fifth set.
The marathon fifth set began with the Utes scoring the first three points of the set, but the lead was erased not too long after. The Utes took a 8-6 advantage at the side switch, but the Gauchos came out of a timeout with a 3-0 run to take the 9-8 lead. Utah put together a 3-0 run of their own, but UCSB returned the effort after scoring four of the next five points. Trailing 13-12, Jardine evened the score for Utah but a block the next play from UCSB gave it match point.
Gibadlo earned a kill to extend the set before Olsen recorded an ace to give Utah its first match point. Then, the Gauchos scored consecutive points for another match point (16-15), but another Gibadlo kill evened the score yet again. Utah scored the next play from a kill, but gave the point right back after a missed serve. Utah earned another two additional match points, but couldn't get it done before UCSB scored two in a row to take the 20-19 lead. Bailey earned a sideout to tie the score, but another service error from Utah followed by a block would cost the Utes the 22-20 marathon fifth set and match.
