Utah improved its winning streak to three after a 2-0 win over Illinois State.
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's soccer team won its third straight match on Sunday evening after earning a 2-0 victory over visiting Illinois State University at Utah Field.
"Unlike Thursday, today was far from our top performance, but we did enough to get a result tonight with two quality goals," remarked head coach Hideki Nakada. "Our goal is to always play our brand of soccer on both sides of the ball, but we lacked sharpness individually and collectively throughout the match. I am excited to get back to work and prepare for a big match against CSU Fullerton on Thursday night."
Utah had goals scored by Kyla Jennings and Katie O'Kane, and both were their first as a Ute. Utah controlled play and outshot the Redbirds 23-2 on the match and 7-1 with shots on goal. This was the Utes' second shutout of the season.
Utah looked to get the offense clicking early, but they would not get a shot on goal. Maryn Granger, O'Kane, and Kaitlyn Conley had shots for the Utes, but the shots were off target or blocked.
Late in the first half, the Utes broke the scoreless tie. In the 41st minute of the match, Ragan Fuller found Jennings, who fired a shot from just outside the box and beat the Redbird goalkeeper to the far corner of the goal, and Utah took a 1-0 lead. That would be the score heading to halftime.
The Utes came out of halftime looking to extend their lead, but Illinois State kept Utah off the scoreboard. Utah's defense stood tall, and Evie Vitali tallied a save on an Allison Baker shot.
Utah increased the lead to 2-0 late in the second half. Luisa Delgado sent a cross in from the far side of the box. She found O'Kane in the middle of the box, and she finished with her left foot for the Utes' second goal of the game.
Following the goal, Utah continued to pressure the Redbirds' defense but could not add another goal, and Utah came away with a 2-0 victory.
