SALT LAKE CITY – An early goal proved to be the deciding factor in a rain-soaked battle between the Utah soccer team and Colorado as the Utes dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
Utah had an early look in the 2' from
Taliana Kaufusi but the Buffs were the ones who converted in the 6' when Shayra James took a throw-in deep down by the corner and turned one in for the 1-0 advantage.
Courtney Talbot got a couple got a couple had a couple good looks after the restart in the 8' but CU's Dani Hansen denied her second shot.
Colorado continued to put pressure on the Utah defense, rattling off multiple shots but none were near the frame until the 24'. However,
Chelsea Peterson was able to drive to her left and make the save on the ground. Talbot and
Haley Farrar each took shots towards the goal in the 30' and 31' but both did not make their way between the pipes. The Buffs took another shot on goal in the 33', this time from Sofia Weiner, but Peterson tracked it from the get go and collected the save before Utah headed into the break down 1-0.
Utah (2-6-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) took the first shot in the second half after getting a corner kick in the 53' but Kaufusi's shot went wide right. The Utes got another set piece opportunity in the 58' but wasn't able to convert. CU then went on the counter after clearing it out but
SJ Edwards, who started the second half, was able to step up and punch the ball out. Colorado (6-3-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) was awarded the corner kick after that but didn't manage to get a shot from the set piece.
The Ute defense continued to get pressured by Colorado's offense as the buffs took four shots – one on goal that Edwards was able to deny – in a three minute span between the 64' and 67'. It wasn't until the 80' did the Utes really get a good look on goal. Unfortunately, Colorado's Hansen was there to stop the back-to-back shots from
Kaylee Coatney (80') and Talbot (81').
As the Utes continued to press the CU defense with the time winding down, Utah had two great looks on consecutive set piece opportunities from the near corner but Hansen denied both headers by Kaufusi inside the box – handing the Utes the 1-0 loss.
Utah remains at home to complete the four-match homestand next Friday, March 26, at 2 p.m. (MT). The match between the Utes and Huskies will be live streamed.
