PULLMAN, Wash. –
Erick Migueles hit two home runs to lead the Utah baseball team to a 12-11 win over Washington State on Saturday afternoon, giving the Utes the series victory and closing out the season for the team.
Utah took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and led by as many as five runs, but as the game continued Washington State rallied back several times in the late innings, tying the game at 9-9 in the seventh before Utah came back for the win.
Migueles went 2-for-2 with four RBI, four runs scored and two walks. He finishes his season with a team-leading seven home runs.
Rykker Tom,
Dominic Foscalina and
Matt Richardson all had two hits and two RBI on the day. Tom also homered for the Utes.
Senior
Josh Lapiana pitched 5 2/3 innings in his final appearance for the Utes, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Jacob Rebar allowed four runs in part of an inning while
Trenton Stoltz, who tied the Utah career record with his 87
th pitching appearance, earned the win after allowing two unearned runs and three hits with a strikeout.
The game began on a strange note as DaShawn Keirsey Jr., struck out to lead off the game but reached first on a wild pitch.
Oliver Dunn hit an RBI double for the game's first run while Tom homered – originally called a double but called a home run on further review – to give Utah a 3-0 lead. A walk and two additional hits in the inning gave Utah another run for a 4-0 lead.
Washington State got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second but the Utes continued to pull ahead with a run in the fourth off hits from Foscalina and
Shea Kramer and added two runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded single from Richardson for a 7-2 lead.
The Cougars began to claw back, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to cut Utah's lead to 7-6. The Utes increased their lead in the top of the seventh as Migueles led off the inning with his first homer of the day.
Chandler Anderson singled and stole second, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt before beating the throw home on a short fly out for a 9-6 advantage.
Washington State tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh with three runs.
With one swing in the top of the eighth, Migueles hit a three-run homer to give Utah a 12-9 lead. Keirsey walked to lead off the inning and Dunn reached on an error before the big hit from Migueles.
Washington State came back for two runs with the help of an error in the bottom of the eighth, cutting Utah's lead to 12-11. In the ninth, the Cougars again threatened, putting two runners on with no outs after a single and hit batter. A wild pitch moved both runners over before Stoltz got a strikeout for the first out of the inning. An intentional walk to load the bases paid off when the Utes got a double play to end the game.
Utah ends its season with a 16-39 record (8-22 Pac-12).
