LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team out-hit UCLA and
Dallas Carroll hit his second homer of the weekend as the Utes fell to the Bruins, 5-3, on Saturday evening.
UCLA scored all five of its runs and had all three of its hits in the first inning, assisted by three walks. All three of Utah's runs came off a three-run home run from Carroll in the sixth inning, who has driven in all six of Utah's runs scored in the last two games.
Utah out-hit UCLA, 5-3 in the game.
Wade Gulden went 2-for-4 at the plate for Utah, while
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., and
Ellis Kelly also each had a hit.
On the mound,
Riley Ottesen settled down after the first inning and allowed just two base runners through the next six innings (a runner also reached on an error). He falls to 4-4 with the loss after throwing seven innings, allowing five runs on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
Dylan Drachler threw the final inning with one strikeout.
In the first inning, the first three hitters reached for UCLA following two walks and an infield single to load the bases. The Bruins got on the board with another walk to send in a run, and the next batter cleared the bases with a home run, giving UCLA a 5-0 lead. Ottesen got the next two batters to strike out to stop the bleeding.
The Utes left runners on in the second and fourth innings before breaking through in the fifth. Kelly and Keirsey hit back-to-back singles and following a ground out, Carroll homered over the left field fence to put Utah on the board and cut the UCLA lead to 5-3.
Gulden hit a leadoff double in the seventh but was left on base.
