SALT LAKE CITY – The Red Team came away with a 3-1 win over the White Team in Utah Volleyball's annual Red/White Scrimmage at the Huntsman Center Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I was very pleased with [the scrimmage]," said head coach
Beth Launiere. "I thought it was high level volleyball for the second week of the season. We did a nice job playing as a team on both sides of the net. It shows that we have a little bit more experience than we have had in the past, so that is nice that we were able to get to more nuance things than we had been before. Overall, very, very pleased with the team level. Obviously, there are some individual things that we need to work on but as far as the team play, it was really good."
Â
The Red Team swept their way past the White Team, winning 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21 before Utah coaches decided to play one more set in the exhibition affair. The White Team picked p the win in the fourth set, downing the Red Team 29-27.

Â
"I think seniors are always leaders because they play with a sense of urgency that is pretty amazing," said Launiere. "I think Tess and Alyssa [Koenig] have done a really nice job and you also have Madi [Legerski] and Bailee [Kendall]. On the court, we will see. There is a difference between captainship and leadership so we will see who steps up in the leadership role. I think lots of people do it in different ways, but I would assume that on the court people will step up and we will have to wait and see.
"Bailey is a terrific setter from Hawaii and she was the Hawaii player of the year," said Launiere. "She is going to be good. I think today was good to get under her belt because I think she had some nerves. Torre is a great volleyball player and will have a role. I am excited about my freshman. Bri [Doehrman] is a nice little libero and has a lot of potential. I am really excited about all of them."

Utah opens the regular season next Friday, hosting the annual Utah Volleyball Classic. The Utes will face Idaho State in its home opener, with a first serve set for 7 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center.
