FIRST SERVE
The Utah volleyball team opens the 2016 campaign this Friday and Saturday, hosting the Utah Volleyball Classic at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
The Utes open the tournament against Idaho State at 7 p.m. on Friday and will follow with matches against Gonzaga (10 a.m.) and Butler (7 p.m.) on Saturday.

All three of Utah's matches will be web-streamed on-line with links to the broadcast found at www.UtahUtes.com. Friday's match play-by-play will be provided by Pace McConkie, while both of Saturday's matches will be called by Jon Oglesby.

ABOUT UTAH
The Utes are coming off a 10-21 campaign overall in 2015. Utah finished 10th in the Pac-12 with a mark of 4-16.

Head coach
Beth Launiere returns for her 27th season at the helm of the Utah Volleyball program, along with second-year assistant coaches
JJ Van Niel and
Malia Shoji. Launiere, who picked up career win No. 500 last season, enters the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 501-324.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
• Idaho State - The Bengals went 23-10 and 13-3 in the Big Sky Conference under first-year head coach Rick Reynolds. ISU returns 10 letterwinners from last season's squad, including all-conference players Hayley Farrer and Bailey Bars.
• Gonzaga - The Bulldogs are coming off a 16-15 season in 2015, while also going 7-11 in the West Coast Conference. Head coach Diane Nelson is in her first season with the Zags. Gonzaga returns nine letterwinners and four starters from last season's team.
• Butler - The Bulldogs went 12-19 overall and 8-10 in the Big East under 16-year head coach Sharon Clark last season. Butler returns seven players, which includes five starters from 2015. Top returners include Anna Logan, Makayla Ferguson and Briana Lilly.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Utah is 29-10 all-time when facing Idaho State, which includes a win over the Bengals in the Utah Classic last season and 12 straight overall. ISU's last win against Utah came back in 1994.
The Utes are 6-1 all-time when facing Gonzaga and have pulled off victories in five straight matches dating back to 1994. Gonaga's only win against Utah came back in 1990.
This will mark the first-ever meeting against Butler and just the fourth match against a Big East foe all-time. Utah defeated Big East member Seton Hall last season.
UTAH IN HOME AND SEASON OPENERS
The Utes have won eight straight season openers dating back to 2008, which included a 3-1 win over Idaho State in the first match of the Utah Classic last season. Utah has also tallied eight consecutive victories in home openers and is 15-1 in its previous 16 home-opening contests.
Five of the eight straight wins at home have come via sweep.
UTES IN THE UTAH CLASSIC
Friday's tournament marks the 19th Utah Classic dating back to 1990. Utah is 42-11 all-time in the Utah Classic, which includes having won eight of the previous nine matches of the tournament from 2013 (3-0), 2014 (3-0) and 2015 (2-1).
Utah is 26-3 in the Classic since 2001 and has recorded a winning record in the tournament in 16 of the previous 17 home tournaments.
UTES PICKED EIGHTH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL
Utah was picked to finish eighth in the 2016 Pac-12 Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the league office announced back on Aug. 17.

The Utes garnered 48 total points in the preseason poll, while Stanford was picked to finish first for a second-straight season after picking up nine of the league's 12 first-place votes. The Cardinal earned a total of 119 points to take the top spot.

UCLA earned a first-place nod and totaled 103 points to come in second overall in the preseason poll. Rounding out the top-five spots were Washington (one first-place vote, 99 points), Oregon (95 points) and USC (one first-place vote, 85 points). Arizona (72 points) and Colorado (50) came in just ahead of the Utes, while Washington State (46 points), California (27 points), Arizona State (26 points) and Oregon State (22 points) rounded out the preseason rankings.
ANAE NAMED TO PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL

Adora Anae was one of 14 players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team. Anae, who was Utah's first player to be named to the preseason squad last season, was named to the Pac-12 First Team in 2015 after finishing the campaign with a school-record 501 kills.
RED TOPS WHITE IN RED-WHITE SCRIMMAGE
Utah Volleyball fans had the opportunity to take a glimpse of this year's squad this past Saturday as the Red Team came away with a 3-1 win over the White Team in Utah Volleyball's annual Red/White Scrimmage at the Huntsman Center.

The Red Team swept their way past the White Team, winning 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21 before Utah coaches decided to play one more set in the exhibition affair. The White Team picked p the win in the fourth set, downing the Red Team 29-27.
Adora Anae totaled 33 kills on the day, collecting 17 kills in the first two sets with the Red Team and then notching 16 kills in a pair of sets with the White Team.
Eliza Katoa recorded 15 kills for the Red Team, while
Carly Trueman totaled 14 kills.
UP NEXT
The Utes continue preseason tournament play next weekend with a trip to Columbia, Mo., to participate in the Missouri Tiger Invitational. The Utes open with an afternoon match against former Western Athletic Conference foe Rice next Friday (Sept. 2), followed by an evening match with the Tigers. Utah closes the tournament against Illinois State on Saturday (Sept. 3).
