PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah volleyball team fell in straight sets (20-25, 21-25, 16-25) to the Washington State Cougars Sunday afternoon at Bohler Gym in Pullman, Wash.
With the loss, Utah falls to 12-9 overall and 2-8 in Pac-12 play, while the Cougars improved to 10-12 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Senior Shelby Dalton led the team in kills for the third straight match, collecting a match-high 15 kills, while hitting a season-high .480 on the afternoon, but WSU countered with 12 kills from Kyra Holt and the Cougars outhit the Utes .255 to .127.
WSU's Jaicee Harris recorded a pair of aces that helped propel the Cougars to a 7-0 run and a 10-4 lead early in set one. WSU would later go up by as many as eight points before a 7-3 run from the Utes pulled Utah within three points, down 23-20. WSU won the final two points though and took set one, 25-20.
The two teams would trade points to begin set two before a 5-1 run pushed WSU's lead to 11-8. A 3-1 run would push WSU's lead to 16-12 and the Cougars would then later go on a 5-2 run to make it 21-17 late in the second set. WSU closed out the set winning four of the final six points to take the set, 25-21, and go up 2-0 against the Utes.
Utah opened the third set with consecutive points before WSU went on a 14-3 run to take a 15-6 lead. Freshman Adora Anae recorded a kill for the Utes to stop the run, but back-to-back points for the Cougars put WSU up by 10, 17-17. Utah won the next two points, but the two squads would trade points before a kill from WSU's Haley McDonald forced Utah to call a timeout, down 23-14.
Back-to-back kills from redshirt freshman Carly Trueman and Dalton pulled Utah within seven points, but WSU won the final two points to take the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
The Cougars came away with its first win in conference play after out-blocking the Utes 8.0 to 7.0 and recording four service aces to Utah's two aces on the day. Utah tallied six service erros in the match, while WSU had just three on the day.
Junior Kendall Cygan managed to record her fifth double-double of the season with 10 kill and a team-high 13 digs, and Anae led the squad with four total blocks.
The Utes remain on the road next weekend, traveling to the desert to face Arizona State and Arizona next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 - Nov. 1. Utah will take on the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday at 7 p.m. (MT) before closing out a four-match road swing against the Wilcats on Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT).
