TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah Utes (12-10, 2-9) opened the second half of Pac-12 play with a 3-2 loss (19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 13-15) to the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devils (16-7, 6-5) Friday evening at Wells Fargo Arena.
Senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen registered a team-high 17 kills and freshman Adora Anae added 13 kills on the night as well, but it wasn't enough as the Utes snapped a five-match winning streak over ASU.
Senior Shelby Dalton snapped ASU's 4-1 run to open the first set with a kill to make it 4-2, but the Sun Devils came right back with three straight points to make 7-2. The Utes would then trade points with the Sun Devils before a 4-0 run forced Utah to call a timeout, down 17-10. Dalton would finally end the 5-0 run with another kill on the right-side, but ASU came away with a side-out following a service error and proceeded to go on a 3-0 run and go up 10 points, 21-11. Utah followed with a 5-1 run to pull within five points of the Sun Devils, but ASU managed to win three of the last five points to take the first set, 25-19.
ASU had four unforced errors to open the second set and Utah took advantage en route to a 6-2 run, but the Sun Devils came right back with a 3-0 run to pull within a point, down 6-5. Both teams would just trade points throughout the majority of the set, with neither team scoring more than three points at a time, but ASU did manage to go on a 4-1 run to take its first lead of the set, 20-19. The Utes would win the next point to tie the set, but ASU's 3-0 run forced Utah to call a timeout, down 23-20. Anae stopped the run with a kill, but back-to-back points gave ASU the set, 25-21, and ASU took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Utes opened the third set with a 5-1 run and thanks to three quick kills and a pair of service aces from Schofield-Olsen, Utah would later extend its lead to 14-5 and force the Sun Devils to call its final timeout of the set. Following Utah's 5-0 run, ASU would not score more than one point at a time until a late 4-0 run made it 23-14, still in favor of the Utes, and Utah called a timeout. Utah went up set point on Anae's kill out of the timeout and later won the set, 25-16, following ASU's service error to end the set.
ASU would go up early, 6-3, but Utah rallied back and a 3-1 Utah run would pull the Utes within a point, down 10-9. After both teams kept pace with each other, Utah would finally go on a 3-0 run and tied the set up 16-16 on a block from Dalton and redshirt freshman Carly Trueman. ASU countered though with a 4-1 run and took a 20-17 lead, forcing Utah to call a timeout. The Utes scored three of the next four points to pull within a point and later tied the match at 21-all on Anae's fifth kill of the set. After trading points with ASU, Utah would eventually take the set 25-23 on Anae's seventh kill of the set and tie the match at 2-2 with ASU.
After opening the fifth set trading points, ASU would score back-to-back points to take a 5-3 lead before a kill from Dalton made it 5-4. Utah would later tie the set 8-8 on a kill from Anae, but ASU retook the lead, 9-8, on a kill from McKenzie Willey. Both teams would continue to trade point-for-point until back-to-back points put ASU up match point, 14-12. Utah called a timeout out and won the point on ASU's attack error, but the Sun Devils took the set 15-13 on Whitney Follette's kill and won the match 3-2.
The Utes dropped its fourth straight match dating back to a 3-1 loss to Stanford back on Oct. 19 and it was the first loss to ASU at Wells Fargo Arena since dropping a five-setter back on Nov. 12, 2011.
The Utes finished the match with three players recording double-figure kill efforts as Dalton added 12 kills in the match as well. Schofield-Olsen collected her sixth double-double of the season with her 17 kills and 10 digs, while both setters - Kalee Kirby (24 assists, 12 digs) and Kendall Cygan (19 assists, 14 digs) - collected double-double each as well.
Senior Lea Adolph led the squad with 17 kills and Anae tallied a team-high six total blocks.
The Utes will not have long to get over this loss as the squad heads to Tucson, Ariz., tomorrow evening to face No. 15 Arizona, who fell to Colorado in four sets earlier on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. (MT) at the McKale Center.
