SALT LAKE CITY - UCLA took an early lead en-route to a 5-1 victory over the Utah baseball team on Sunday afternoon.
The Utes stranded 13 runners on base during the game, including putting several runners on base in the late innings and loading the bases in the fifth and ninth innings. The Utes had eight hits compared to nine for UCLA.
Tyler Relf led the Utes at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance. He also had two walks, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances.
Utah reliever Kesley Kondo was instrumental in holding off the Bruins in the late innings, taking over on the mound late in the fourth inning and allowing just four hits. He had two strikeouts and allowed no walks.
"The two stars for me were Kondo and Relf," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We had our opportunities late but we didn't get it done. It's a little disappointing how we played, but UCLA is very, very talented."
UCLA took a 4-0 lead over the first two innings, including a three-run first inning. Beau Amaral led off the game with a solo home run to right field, and Trevor Brown hit a two-RBI single to left field in the first inning. A Utah error sent a Bruin run across with two outs in the second inning.
The Utes got on the board in the third inning. Back-to-back singles from Relf and Shaun Cooper led to Relf scoring on Parker Morin's sacrifice fly.
UCLA added to its total in the top of the fourth, as Jeff Gelalich hit an RBI single up the middle with runners on the corners to put the score at 5-1 before Kondo forced Brown into a fly ball to end the inning.
Utah had its chances as the game went on. The Utes had two on with one out in the eighth before UCLA forced a double play, and after loading the bases with one out in the ninth an infield fly and strikeout ended the game.
Utah starter Tony Vocca pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. He falls to 1-3 on the year.
UCLA starter Grant Watson threw six innings, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts. At the plate, Tyler Heineman and Gelalich each had two hits.
Utah faces in-state rival BYU on Tuesday, April 3, at 6:00 p.m. in Spring Mobile Ballpark.
