Ute Baseball Drops Heartbreaker to BYU, 9-6

SALT LAKE CITY - BYU scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning as the Utah baseball team dropped a 9-6 heartbreaker on Tuesday evening.
The Utes held a 6-4 lead going into the ninth inning. The Cougars had six hits in the ninth inning to score their five runs, including doubles from Austin Hall, Stephen Wells and Alex Wolfe, while Tanner Chauncey hit a well-placed triple to right field.
BYU closer Mason Marshall struck out three-straight Utes in the ninth to close out the game.
Utah was led at the plate by Trey Nielsen, who went 2-for-4 in the game. Parker Morin and James Brooks each drove in two runs on the night.
Tyler Wagner earned the loss on the mound for the Utes after entering in the ninth inning. Starter Ben Mordini allowed four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Mitch Watrous pitched two scoreless and hitless innings with a strikeout, while Tanner Tripp closed out the game in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Each team scored in both of the first two innings. The Utes took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single from Brooks.
BYU went back on top in the fourth inning with two runs on RBI hits from Jacob Brugman and Kelton Caldwell to take a 4-3 lead.
The Utes rallied back in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take a 5-4 lead. After Connor Eppard walked to lead off the inning, two runs scored on back-to-back doubles from Nielsen and Jo Jo Sharrar. Morin added to the total in the seventh with a home run over the right field fence.
BYU was led by Brugman, who went 3-for-5 for the Cougars. Chris Howard earned the win on the mound. He was one of five pitchers for BYU.
The Utes turn things around quickly, taking on fourth-ranked Arizona beginning on Thursday, April 5, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
