Ute Baseball Struggles on Final Day of LMU Series

LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team struggled on the final day of the four-game series with Loyola Marymount, falling in both Saturday's postponed game, 13-1, and Sunday's scheduled single game, 3-1.
Utah (1-3) was down 6-1 after Saturday's game was postponed due to darkness after the seventh inning. LMU (3-1) came out swinging after the game resumed on Sunday morning, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Although the Utes had runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, they couldn't put a rally together.
C.J. Cron had two hits for Utah in the contest while Rick Cornu, Corey Shimada and Kyle Myers also had hits. On the mound, Andrew Wilding, who pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs, picks up his first loss of the year.
In the final game on Sunday, Utah out-hit the Lions 8-5 in the game but a three-run home run from LMU's Angelo Songco was all the scoring the Lions would need for a 3-1 victory.
The Utes left runners on base in six innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the third. Utah's lone run of the game came in the sixth inning, after Nick Kuroczko tripled to center field and scored on Cooper Blanc's double.
Shimada and Cornu each went 2-for-3 in the contest. Cornu hit a pair of doubles on the day.
After giving up three runs on three hits in the first inning, Bryn Card pitched over six innings of two-hit ball, but earned the loss on the day.
"Card pitched very well and we had our chances to score but couldn't get the key hits today," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I think we did some good things, but we are still a little rusty. I am encouraged about what our starting pitchers did in games three and four, but we still need to get our roles down in the bullpen and get a consistent lineup. That's what the preseason is for. We are a work in progress - guys had good at-bats from time to time but I'm not so sure that any one guy stood out.
The Utes return to the field on Friday, Feb. 27, to begin a four-game series at Cal State Bakersfield.
