BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Behind home runs from Austin Jones, Corey Shimada and Rick Cornu, the Utah baseball team defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 12-1, on Friday, Feb. 27.

Utah (2-3) took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with Shimada and C.J. Cron hitting a pair of RBI singles before Jones homered to left field for two RBI. The Utes pushed the lead to 7-0 in the second behind Shimada's two-run home run and an RBI single from Cornu.

Utah added two runs in the second inning and three runs in the fifth inning. Cornu hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

Brian Budrow (1-1) earned his first win of the year on the mound, pitching seven innings with six strikeouts. Tyler Andersen pitched the final two innings with four K's.

Cornu was 3-for-4 on the day with a team-high five RBI and two runs scored. Shimada went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Cron was 3-for-5. Michael Beltran scored three runs with a pair of doubles.

"We did a nice job in the early innings getting some big two-out hits and putting some runs on the board," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Rick Cornu had some key hits for us and his three-run homer kind of put it away for us. Brian Budrow wasn't as sharp as he has been in the past, but he threw strikes, had some short innings and got a lot of ground balls and got us through the seventh."

Ryan McIntyre, Jeremy Rodriguez and Martin Medina each went 2-for-4 for CSUB (2-3). The Roadrunners only run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Rodriguez that sent Brandon Boren around to score.

Mickey Jannis earned the start for CSUB and pitched three innings. He falls to 0-2 on the year.

Utah and CSUB resume their four-game series on Saturday, Feb. 28, with a doubleheader at noon (PT).
