SALT LAKE CITY --- An eighth-inning rally wasn't enough for the University of Utah baseball team as it saw its seven-game winning streak snapped here this evening. BYU topped the Utes here at Franklin Covey, 15-2.
The Utes (23-25 overall, 10-13 Mountain West) found themselves down 7-0 when they staged a two-out rally in the eighth. Utah scored two runs in the second-to-last frame. One came off of Dustin Hennis' RBI single up the middle and the other off of Tyler Relf's single to right.
"I didn't think we were aggressive enough in the first six innings," said Utah skipper Bill Kinneberg. "We had our chances early to put runs up on the board but we didn't convert on them. Our plan was to bring Brian Budrow in after the eighth to close the game, but BYU capitalized on our mistakes, and they put a dagger in us late in the ball game."
The two runs wasn't enough to counter BYU's (21-34, 9-14 MWC) effort. It scored 14 times among the last three innings, stretching a 1-0 lead into a 13-run win.
Utah starter John James is saddled with the loss, falling to 3-7 on the year. He threw for 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs. He had three walks to just two strike outs on the evening.
The visitors had 19 hits to Utah's nine. The lone Ute batter with multiple hits today was Dustin Hennis. He was 3-for-4 with one RBI. The other RBI went to Tyler Relf. Relf, who came in for an injured Cooper Blanc in the third, was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
With today's victory, BYU secures the overall Deseret First Duel trophy. Utah can still win the baseball trophy tomorrow with the third and final game of the three-game set. First pitch at Franklin Covey Field is set for 1 p.m.
"The nice thing about baseball is that tomorrow's a new day," said Kinneberg. "We still have a chance to go out there and accomplish the goals that we set for ourselves heading into this week."
The Cougars got on the board in the third inning. Andrew Law hit a leadoff double, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Law scored when Sean McNaughton hit a ground-out RBI to the third baseman.
BYU batted around and hung a five-spot on the board in the seventh. McNaughton's two-RBI double to left, and Dan Vargas' two-run homer accounted for most of the damage. Another run came in the eighth, and BYU batted around again in the ninth in scoring eight more times.
Utah did put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but it couldn't convert on its early opportunities.
Starter Blake Torgerson gets the win on the mound for BYU. He's now 6-4 on the year.
