OREM, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team tied a school record, hitting nine home runs in the first game of a doubleheader with Utah Valley State Friday. The Utes used the power surge to blast the Wolverines 18-5 in the seven-inning game.
The contest was scoreless through the first three innings as Utah's Josh Cooper and UVSC's Brett Guerrero looked as though they were going to wage a pitchers' duel. That all changed in the fourth inning.
Utah scored twice in the top of the inning, when first baseman Jay Brossman tripled and scored on a groundout. Center fielder John Welsh then hit the first of Utah's homers, a solo shot to left-center field. Utah Valley State put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, tying the contest at 2-2.
The Utah home run barrage began in earnest in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Mike Tummolo and shortstop Ryan Khoury hit back-to-back solo jacks to make it 4-2. After a Brossman double, Welsh hit his second consecutive dinger --and his seventh of the season -- to put the Utes up 6-2. It was the first time a Ute had gone yard in back-to-back at-bats in nearly two years.
Utah freshman Corey Shimada hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth to put Utah up 8-2. Designated hitter Clayne Garrett then chased Khoury home with a sacrifice fly to give Utah a 9-2 advantage.
The flood gates opened wide in the top of the seventh. Utah hit four home runs and scored nine runs in the inning. Third baseman Erich Kemp led off with a solo shot. Second basemanTyler Kmetko hit his second grand slam of the season later in the inning. Four batters later, Kemp hit his second home run of the inning, a three-run shot. Right fielder Joe Mozeleski capped the carnage with a solo shot to give Utah an 18-2 lead.
UVSC pushed three runs across in the bottom of the seventh against Ute reliever Greg Krause, but it was way too little, way too late.
Cooper (3-3) took the win for Utah, allowing two runs in five innings of work. Khoury and Brossman were both 4-for-5 at the plate. Kmetko and Kemp each had four RBIs for the Utes. Guerrero (0-3) suffered the loss for UVSC, allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
The nine home runs tied a Utah school record, which had stood since 1987 when the Utes hit nine homers against Air Force.
