Utes Finish Suspended Game with Win

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team came away with a win and a loss Saturday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Utes finished a defeat of New Mexico that started back on April 2. But the Lobos hammered Utah in the regularly-scheduled contest.
Utah led New Mexico 11-4 after eight innings back on April 2 in San Diego at the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament. The game was suspended, by conference rule, when both teams had to catch flights home. Saturday afternoon, the two squads played the final inning of that contest.
Neither team scored in the one inning of play, finishing the MWC Preseason Tournament contest, giving Utah an 11-4 win. Ryan Khoury, Tyler Kmetko, Clayne Garrett and John Welsh all finished with a pair of RBIs for the Utes in that game. Greg Krause tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run. Krause improved his record to 3-0.
In Saturday's regularly-scheduled MWC contest, New Mexico used a 10-run fifth inning to blow the Utes out, 17-8.
The Lobos took a 2-0 lead off Utah starter Eric King in the third inning. But the Utes answered in the fifth. Left fielder Corey Shimada knocked a two-out single up the middle. Ryan Khoury then yanked a home run to left, knotting the game at 2-2. But the score wasn't tied for long.
In the bottom of the inning, New Mexico unloaded on Utah pitching. King, Brian Lane and Brian Hedman all saw duty in the fifth. When it was over, the Lobos had scored 10 runs on eight hits and one error to grab a 12-2 advantage. Lane took the brunt of the damage. He gave up seven runs without recording an out.
The Lobos added single runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 14-2. Utah scored once in the eighth when Khoury tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. New Mexico tacked on three more in the bottom half to make it 17-3. Although it was too late, the Utes went down swinging in the ninth. Utah put five runs on the board in the final frame, including another two-run dinger off the bat of Khoury, to account for the final tally.
King (3-5) was saddled with the loss for Utah. Danny Ray Herrera remained undefeated for New Mexico, going 8-0. Herrera allowed just three runs in eight innings of work.
The lone bright spot for Utah was Khoury, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
The Utes and Lobos will finish their series Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
