SAN DIEGO -- The University of Utah baseball team grounded the Air Force Falcons 13-6 Friday afternoon in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Utes evened their overall record at 12-12 and moved their MWC mark to 1-1 with the win.
Utah jumped on Falcons starter Jake Petro in the first inning. Ryan Khoury, Tyler Kmetko and Bret Baldwin loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of singles, respectively. Khoury scored the first run of the game on a balk. Kmetko and Baldwin came around on a two-run double off the bat of Jay Brossman. John Welsh later chased home Brossman with a single through the right side to make it 4-0.
The Utes added two more runs in the third inning to go on top 6-0. Brossman started the inning with a double to right-center and moved to third on a groundout. After a walk to Erich Kemp, Mozeleski's squeeze bunt pushed Brossman across the plate. Kemp later scored on a Scott Malone RBI single to center.
Air Force finally lit the scoreboard in the fourth inning against Utah starter Eric King. The Falcons scored a single, unearned run in the inning to pull within 6-1. AFA got within three runs, 6-3, in the top of the eighth when Price Paramore ripped a two-run home run off Ute reliever Shad McCord.
But Utah put the game on ice in the bottom half of the eighth. The Utes erupted for seven runs on three hits, five walks and one Falcon error. Kmetko ripped a grand slam to put Utah on top 10-3. After going up 11-3, Mozeleski later added a two-run single to push the Utes' lead to 13-3.
Air Force didn't go quietly, however. Karl Bolt hit a two-run home run off McCord to make it 13-5. After a McCord walk, Brad DeVore came on in relief for the Utes. McCord allowed the inherited runner to score, making it 13-6. But he was able to avoid further damage and preserved the Utah victory.
"We did some good things tonight," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We were a little flat in the middle innings, which I wasn't happy with. But we had a big eighth inning. Tyler Kmetko's grand slam kind of put us over the hump. Eric King gave us seven very good innings and that was good to see."
King (2-4) picked up the victory for Utah. He allowed one run unearned run on just two hits in seven innings of work. McCord allowed five runs in one inning pitched, while DeVore finished out with one inning of scoreless work. Brossman was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Utah offense. Kmetko was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
Petro (2-1) worked just one inning, allowing four runs for Air Force in a losing effort. Kyle DePierre worked five innings, before giving way to Kyle Yamamoto, who allowed seven runs in two innings for the Falcons. Bolt paced AFA at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.
The Utes are in action again Saturday morning, facing BYU at 11:00 a.m. PST.
