SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The final conference road trip of the season got off to a good start for the University of Utah volleyball team as it topped San Diego State this evening, 3-0.
Game scores were 30-25, 30-18 and 30-20. The win marks the third sweep in the last four matches as Utah improves to 19-3 overall and is still a perfect 11-0 in Mountain West action. SDSU slips to 3-21 overall and to 3-8 in conference tilts.
"I thought that we came out focused and intense this evening," head coach Beth Launiere commented. "Everyone played a good match tonight and we were able to take care of business."
Utah hit .318 for the match, buoyed by a game two mark of .455. The Utes tallied 48 kills and 14 errors on 107 attacks for the match. Meanwhile, Utah held the Aztecs to a mere .178 (36-18- 101) and owned a slight edge in team blocks, 8-7.
Lyndsey Henderson continues to be the top attacker for the Utes. The middle blocker posted a match-high 15 kills and hit .667 for the match. She only had three errors on her 18 swings. Henderson also tied for match-high honors with four blocks. SDSU's Ashley Bowker also tallied four blocks.
Kelsie Kartchner figured in on the offense as well, nearly posting a triple-double with nine kills and 15 assists. The setter also chipped in on defense with 10 digs. Tracy Neumeier's 19 assists led the Utes but it was second to the Aztecs' Kristen Castillo who had 28.
Connie Dangerfield's 11 digs led the visitors. Kara Moriarty's 10 kills was tops for SDSU while Kari Dykema led the way with a match-best 18 digs.
The Utes, who won game one despite being outhit (.323-.237), cruised to an 18-point, game-two win by hitting an impressive .455. Utah tacked up 15 kills on three errors and 33 attempts while holding the Aztecs to a meager .139 (12-7-36) for the game.
Utah's offense continued to click at the onset of game three, as it opened up a 7-0 lead on the home team while hitting a smooth .750. However, SDSU clawed back to within three, 19-16. The Utes were able to up its lead to nine, 28-17, as it held the Aztecs to a .088 (10-7-34). Utah finished the third frame hitting .278 (15-5-36).
The Utes return to action tomorrow night when they play at UNLV. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (PST).
