SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 8 University of Utah women's volleyball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a three-game sweep (30-22, 30-26, 30-23) of Idaho State tonight. It was the Utes' 21st consecutive home win.
Idaho State jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in game one, but the Utes went on to score eight straight points en route to the win. The second game was tied at 12 and 15, but Utah pulled away in the end for the win. Senior Sylva Strzinkova dominated, finishing with seven kills in game two alone. Head Coach Beth Launiere subbed in all her players in the third and final game, and sophomore Lyndsey Phillips, back from an ankle injury, served four straight points (including two service aces) and the Utes sealed the victory.
Utah out-hit Idaho State .242 to .121 and finished with 30 more kills than the Bengals (58 to 28). The Utes also served nine aces, compared to zero for Idaho State.
Strzinkov? notched a match-high 15 kills and junior Kim Turner finished with 10 kills, four blocks and two service aces. Senior Brenda Beal hit for .600 with six kills and no errors. Junior libero Jackie Morrill led the Utes with nine digs, while junior Britt Whiting and sophomore Sabine Schulz added eight kills apiece. Schulz also had seven digs.
Sophomores Kelsie Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier split time setting. Kartchner had 29 assists and Neumeier dished out 19.
"We played pretty well tonight," Launiere said. "I tweaked our lineup yesterday and that definitely showed. When we played Stanford, they identified some of our problem areas, so we made these adjustments as a result. We have so many different options with this team, it's just a matter of prioritizing them."
Ali Gorny led the Bengals with 10 kills, while Melanie Tucker and Kylie Gilmore each had 10 digs.
UP NEXT: The Utes will participate in the Boise State Tournament over the weekend. Utah will face Eastern Washington at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Utes will play Boise State at 12:30 p.m. and George Washington at 5:00 p.m.
"Eastern Washington is undefeated and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament last year," Launiere said. "It will be a good challenge for us."
