Utah Volleyball Team Wins Utah Classic

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 13 University of Utah women's volleyball won the Utah Classic tonight when they edged past No. 12 Pacific in five games in the championship of the tournament, 26-30, 30-28, 30-21, 28-30, 15-9. The Utes have now won 20 straight matches at home.
Junior Kim Turner led Utah with her second double-double of the season, notching 20 kills and 11 blocks. Three other Utes finished with double-doubles: senior Sylva Strzinkova (20 kills, 19 digs), and sophomores Sabine Schulz (17 kills, 14 digs) and Kelsie Kartchner (56 assists, 12 digs).
Jennifer Joines, a 2001 All-American, led the Tigers with 15 kills and 12 digs, but hit .000 on the match. "Joines was an All-American last year and we held her to a .000 attack percentage," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "That's pretty impressive.
"It was a well-played match by both teams. Coming in, I felt like we had a little more offensive power than Pacific, and that would be the difference, which it was. Not only did our big guns come up huge, but other people stepped up, too. Lyndsey had a really nice match -- she hit for .412 and only committed two hitting errors. Sabine also came up big for us.
"My one concern as we started play this weekend was ball control, and we were great with that," she added. "Jackie (Morrill) was so valuable tonight. I think she made about 50 percent of the passes for us."
In addition to claiming the championship, four Utes were named to the all-tournament team, led by Turner, who was named tournament MVP for the second year in a row. Strzinkov? and Kartchner made the team, and Morrill was named the top libero.
Turner finished the tournament with 45 kills, 16 blocks (including five solos), 24 digs and four service aces. She set new tournament records for total blocks, solo blocks and block assists in a match.
Strzinkov? recorded 53 kills, 30 digs and four blocks. She hit .317 over the three matches.
Kartchner led all setters with 116 assists (10.55 per game). She also had 20 digs and nine blocks.
Morrill finished with 30 digs and a .986 reception percentage (she committed just one error on 69 attempts).
UP NEXT: The Utes travel to Stanford, Calif., to participate in the Stanford Invitational next Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Sept. 6, Utah plays Cal Poly at 5:00 p.m. (PDT). On Saturday, Sept. 7, Utah will faces San Jose State, which finished No. 24 in the final 2001 poll, at noon, followed by a 7:00 p.m. match against Stanford, the No. 1 team in the nation and reigning national champions.
