Utah Volleyball Team Nets Another Sweep in Utah Classic

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 13 University of Utah women's volleyball team got its second three-game victory in as many days today when they defeated Murray State 30-27, 30-19, 30-6, in day two of the Utah Classic. The Utes racked up 12 service aces along the way, setting a new tournament record. It was Utah's 19th consecutive match win on Crimson Court, dating back to the 2000 season.
Utah was led by senior Sylva Strzinkova, who finished with 18 kills and hit for .515. She also added four digs, two service aces and a block. Junior Kim Turner added 15 kills, seven digs, four blocks and two aces. Sophomore Kelsie Kartchner had 31 assists in the match and junior Jackie Morrill had a team-high nine digs. The Utes hit .340 as a team.
Lindy Northcutt led the Racers with eight kills, while Kristen Jones and Nikki Wong each finished with seven digs apiece. Wong also posted 19 assists. Murray State hit .021 on the match.
"When Murray State played Pacific yesterday, we noticed that their setter dumped the ball over a lot, and that's how they got to Pacific," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "I thought we adjusted very well and did a good job of taking that away.
"This match gave us a chance to play loose," Launiere continued. "Once Murray State started struggling, our offense just opened up. We were able to run lots of different things and get everyone in."
UP NEXT: The Utes face No. 12 Pacific at 7:00 p.m. tonight in the final match of the Classic. Both teams are 2-0 and will be playing for the tournament championship. "It will be our toughest match so far," Launiere said. "We've been looking forward to this match for a while and we like our chances. I think we match up well against them. It should be a very exciting match."
