No. 20 Utah Volleyball Team Sweeps Air Force

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team swept Air Force tonight 30-10, 30-26, 30-25, to improve to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes notched 27 kills before committing their first attacking error and hit for .353 on the match.
Utah came out on fire in game one, jumping out to 10-4 lead and extending it to 18-8 before winning by the score 30-10. Utah did not commit a hitting error in the game, hitting for a phenomenal .739 compared to the -.048 of the Falcons. Three Utes hit for a perfect 1.000 on the game - sophomores Kelsie Kartchner, Sabine Schulz and Lyndsey Phillips. Senior Brenda Beal led Utah with five kills on the game.
Game two started out much closer, with neither team leading by more than two in the first 10 points. Utah stretched its lead to six (17-11), but the Falcons narrowed it to one (18-17) before taking a 19-18 lead. There were then five ties before the Utes scored three straight points to take the momentum and the eventual 30-26 win. Junior Kim Turner and Phillips each had four kills on the game.
In game three, Air Force took its first lead at 9-8, but Utah quickly tied it and then went on a 10-4 run for an 18-13 lead. The Utes went on to win 30-25.
"This was a really aggressive and sustained effort tonight," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "It felt good. It was a positive, hard effort by everyone on the team. We've addressed some issues and tonight it all came together."
Beal led Utah on the night with 11 kills and just one error for a .769 hitting percentage. Both were season highs. She also added six blocks. "You can't put a price on seniors," Launiere said. "Brenda showed that tonight."
Turner and senior Sylva Strzinkova also finished with 11 kills apiece. Schulz had a team-high nine digs and Kartchner dished out 40 assists on the match.
UP NEXT: The Utes host conference rival Brigham Young for a 7:00 p.m. match next Friday, Oct. 11, at Crimson Court.
