No. 19 Utah Volleyball Team Sweeps Brigham Young

SALT LAKE CITY - For just the fourth time in school history, the University of Utah women's volleyball team (14-4, 4-1) swept Brigham Young University. The No. 19 Utes did so in impressive fashion, winning by the scores 30-24, 30-28, 30-24 at Crimson Court tonight. (The Utes also notched three-game wins over BYU in 1979, 1995 and 2000, and all four sweeps have come at home for Utah). Utah finished the match with 17 blocks, compared to the seven of the Cougars, and hit for .241.
Game one was tied five times in the first 10 points before the Utes pulled ahead for good, leading by as many as nine and winning by six. Utah shut down the BYU blocking game, out-blocking the Cougars 7-0. Senior captain Sylva Strzinkova led Utah with four blocks. She also notched five kills on the game, while Kim Turner and Lyndsey Phillips each had four. The Utes hit for .257 on the game, compared to the .171 of the Cougars.
Utah led for all of game two, building its lead to as many as seven (17-10). Blocking was even on the game (3-3), but the Utes hit for .217 while BYU hit for just .098. Sophomore Sabine Schulz was unstoppable, finishing with eight kills and hitting for .727. She also had six digs on the game. Strzinkov? added seven kills for the Utes.
In game three, the Utes were down by as many as three and there were five ties before Utah pulled away at the end to win by six. The Utes had seven blocks on the game and out-hit the Cougars by the biggest margin of the night (.259 to .025).
"This was what we went in to do," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "I was really pleased with our steadiness. It was the most stable match we've played all season. It was also the best serving match we've had all season.
"They're a different team, but it doesn't matter," Launiere continued. "It's still a rivalry."
Schulz led the Utes on the night, finishing with 12 kills on 19 attempts and no errors for a career-high .632 hitting percentage. She also had 12 digs and two blocks.
"Sabine is settling in," Launiere said. "She had a great week in practice and just got herself ready."
Strzinkov? finished with a team-high 15 kills, while junior Jackie Morrill had a team-high 13 digs. Turner notched nine kills and five blocks on the night, while Phillips finished with seven kills and six blocks. Sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner dished out 40 assists on the match.
UP NEXT: The Utes travel to Laramie, Wyo., for a 7:00 p.m. match at Wyoming next Friday, Oct. 18. On Saturday, Oct. 19, Utah plays at Colorado State at 7:00 p.m.
