RIVERSIDE, CALIF. - The University of Utah baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning on their way to a 10-1 victory over UC-Riverside. The win was the fifth straight for the Utes (5-5) and gave them a three game sweep of UCR (3-5).
The Utes used an eight run first inning, which included a grand slam by catcher Donald Hawes. They scored their eight runs on only four hits off of Highlanders freshman pitcher Matt Thiessen. Hawes finished the game 1-for-4. One day after having his eight game hitting streak snapped, Mike Westfall went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Brett Lindsey (2-1) went seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run. He finished with six strike outs and only one walk on his way to his second victory of the season. Ben Heusser and Matt McAfee each pitched one scoreless innings to end the game.
The win puts the Utes at .500 for the first time this season and gives them a five game winning streak. Next weekend Utah heads for Albuquerque, N.M. to play in the Applebee's Baseball Fiesta. In the tournament they will face Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas State.
