SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team defeated in-state rival Brigham Young 12-11 in the first game of a three-game series. The win boosts Utah to a 10-12 Mountain West Conference record and to a 20-25 season mark. BYU drops to 24-22 and 12-10 in the MWC. The Utes scored 12 runs on 13 hits with two errors, while the Cougars were kept to 11 runs on 12 hits with three errors.
The Utes led the game from the bottom of the third inning, the Cougars posted one run in the top of the inning on a solo homer by shortstop Seth King. Utah answered back scoring five runs in the bottom of the third on a triple by sophomore Brit Pannier and a grand slam home run by Nate Weese - his second of the season. BYU scored two runs in the fourth inning bringing the score to 5-3, but the Utes continued their barrage scoring three runs on a single by Mike Goff, a double by Pannier and a single by Rob Stuart. Utah scored one run in the fifth inning to lead the game 9-3. The Utes slipped a bit allowing five Cougar runs in the top of the sixth, including a three-run homer by King. Utah retained the lead however scoring two runs in the seventh inning on a double by Weese and another triple by Pannier. BYU struggled back scoring one run in the eighth and two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the score 11-11. The Cougars brought in the tying runs in the ninth on two singles. Utah came back to claim the day however when Pannier cracked a double to bring in Goff.
Pannier led the Utes going 4-for-5 and pounding two doubles and two triples. The designated hitter scored two runs in the game and two RBI.
Weese was also hot at the plate hitting 3-for-5. He scored three runs and four RBI in the game hitting a double, a grand slam home run and stealing one base.
Goff was 2-for-3 scoring a pair of runs and RBI. He had one double and a sacrifice fly.
Pitcher Mitch Maio earns the win for Utah pitching the last 1.2 innings of the game. He faced 11 batters, gave up three hits and two runs and struck out one.
Jared Cavaness started the game for Utah pitching the first 5.2 innings. He faced 27 batters, allowed nine hits and eight runs while striking out four.
