SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah baseball team is 1-1 against Brigham Young dropping the second game of a three-game series 10-5. The Utes defeated the Cougars 12-11 yesterday. Utah drops to 20-26 with a 10-13 Mountain West Conference mark. BYU is now 26-23 and 13-10 in the conference.
Utah scored five runs on 11 hits with four errors. Brigham Young scored 10 runs on 11 hits with three errors.
The Cougars led the game from the first inning when they scored four runs on six back-to-back hits, including a three-run homer by catcher Michael Davies. Utah scored solo runs in the bottom of the second and third. BYU continued building its lead bringing in two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Utah came back to bridge the gap scoring three runs in the sixth inning on a double by third baseman Mike Goff, a single by designated hitter Brit Pannier and a three-shot home run by catcher Donald Hawes. Brigham Young went on to score four more runs in the game, a pair in both the eighth and ninth innings, to win the game 10-5.
Pannier has led the Utes at the plate for two consecutive games. The sophomore was 3-for-4 today scoring one run and one RBI. In the first game of the series, Pannier was 4-for-5 cracking two doubles and two triples, including the game winning double to seal the Utah victory. Pannier's strides boost him to lead the team with a .358 batting average and ties him for third on the team with 12 doubles.
Pitcher Ryan Bailey earns the loss for Utah. The sophomore pitched only the first inning for Utah giving up six hits and four runs.
The Utes and the Cougars round up the conference series with a final game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., at Franklin Covey Field. Baseball fans that attend the Utah-BYU game are invited to stay for a special double header featuring the Salt Lake Buzz and the Tucson Sidewinders at 6:15 p.m.
