LAS VEGAS - The Utah baseball team is 1-1 in a three-game series against UNLV after defeating the Rebels 7-6 tonight. The Utes lost the first game of the series 2-4 yesterday, but rallied back for the win today. Utah scored seven runs on 11 hits with four errors and left UNLV with six runs on 10 hits with no errors.
The Utes started the game scoring three runs in the first inning on back-to-back home runs by Donnie Saba, Adam Castleton and Sam Swenson. The Rebels bridged the gap scoring two runs in the second on two singles. Utah scored solo runs in the third and fourth on home runs by Brit Pannier and Castleton, but UNLV came back to dominate the contest scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth with four singles. The Utes rallied for the win scoring two runs in the top of the seventh on a triple by Swenson, a double by Jed Chrisman and a single by Pannier.
Swenson led the Utes at the plate going 3-for-4 and hitting two triples and home run. The centerfielder leads the team with a .355 batting average, 50 hits, 18 doubles and seven triples. He ranks second for Utah with seven home runs.
Pitcher Brett Lindsey earns the win for Utah. The hurler pitched two innings in the contest, faced 10 batters and allowed only one run. Mitch Maio picks up the save for the Utes pitching the last three innings of the game and striking out five batters. Maio is second on the team with a 3.25 ERA and leads the Utes with 42 strikeouts.
Utah and UNLV finish the three-game series with a final game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
