SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team boosts its record to 19-25, with a 9-12 Mountain West Conference mark going 2-1 in a series against UNLV. The Utes defeated the Rebels 13-9 in the final game of the series today scoring 13 runs on 16 hits with one error. UNLV scored nine runs on 13 hits with three errors.
Utah commanded the game from the first inning scoring six runs on four walks, four singles and a double by freshman Brit Pannier. UNLV bridged the gap scoring three runs in the second inning on a two-run homer by catcher Chad Beasley. Both teams scored solo runs in the third inning, the Utes on a double by third baseman Mike Goff and the Rebels on a solo home run by first baseman Trent Kitsch. Utah boosted its lead 9-4 scoring two runs in the fourth inning on three singles, but the Rebels answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score within two. Neither team let up in the sixth, both scoring a pair of runs. Utah pulled ahead however scoring two runs in the eighth inning and kept the Rebels to three scoreless rounds.
Goff led the Utes at the plate going 3-for-4. The junior had one double, scored one run and two RBI in the game.
Pannier was 3-for-5, hitting two doubles. The designated hitter also scored three runs and two RBI in the contest.
Sam Swenson, Nate Weese and Jed Chrisman all hit 2-for-4. Swenson scored three runs and one RBI hitting his 19th double of the season. Weese scored one run and one RBI and Chrisman scored one run and three RBI.
Pitcher Jon Lewis earns the win for the Utes pitching two innings of relief. He faced 12 batters, gave up two runs and struck out two at the plate. Matt McAfee earns a save for Utah pitching the last 2.2 innings of the game. He faced 11 batters, afforded two hits and struck out three.
The Utes return home to host in-state rival Brigham Young in a three-game series April 27-29. All games begin at 12:00 p.m., and are scheduled to be played at Franklin Covey Field.
