SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game series against San Diego State 8-4. The Utes scored four runs on seven hits with two errors, while giving up eight runs and 11 hits, with two errors, to the Aztecs. The game brings Utah to a 17-22 season record with a 7-10 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes started the game scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning on a double by shortstop Rob Stuart. The game was then suspended for 45 minutes after only four and a half innings of play due to inclement weather. When the game resumed, San Diego State scored three runs on two singles and a double to lead 3-1. Utah quickly evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single by freshman Brit Pannier that was brought in on a home run by catcher Donald Hawes, his second of the series and fifth of the season. The Aztecs rallied back however, scoring five runs in the seventh inning. Utah was only able to score one more run in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Adam Castleton and Sam Swenson.
Sophomore Ryan Bailey picks up the loss for Utah. The starter pitched 6.1 innings of the contest and faced 30 batters. He allowed nine hits and six earned runs, while striking out three batters. Matt McAfee came in for 2.2 innings of relief.
The Utes and the Aztecs round out the three-games series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
