SAN DIEGO - The Utah baseball team split 1-1 in a double header against San Diego today. The Utes defeated the Toreros 6-5 and lost 3-2, bringing their series to 1-2.
In the first game, Utah scored six runs on 13 hits while keeping San Diego to five runs on six hits with one error. The Utes jumped to an early lead scoring one run in the first and three in the top of the third. The Toreros rallied back scoring one run in the third and four in the fifth. Utah came back to win the game scoring solo runs in the sixth and ninth.
Britt Pannier, Sam Swenson and Jed Chrisman led the Utes at the plate hitting 3-for-4. Pannier scored two runs and one RBI for Utah while Swenson and Chrisman each scored one run and one RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Mitch Maio picked up his first win of the season pitching the last four innings of the game. The hurler faced 16 batters, allowed only one hit and struck out seven batters. The feat maintains Maio's perfect 0.00 ERA and boosts his overall strikeout record to lead the team with 20.
In the second game, both the Utes and the Toreros had six hits. Utah however was held to one run while San Diego scored three. Once again, Utah started the game scoring one run in the first inning. The Utes' lead was fleeting however as the Toreros scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.
Pannier scored Utah's only run hitting a double in his first at bat. Swenson followed up the sophomore hitting a double of his own and Chrisman scored the run with a sacrifice hit.
Sophomore Ryan Bailey takes the loss for the Utes bringing his season record to 1-2. He pitched the first two innings of the game facing 13 batters and throwing two strikeouts.
The Utes and the Toreros finish the four-game series with a single game tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m.
