SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's soccer team battled to a 2-1 loss to SMU. The Utes outshot the Mustangs 21-18.
SMU led the game 1-0 at the half. The Mustangs started the game off strong scoring its first goal in the first five minutes of the game. SMU midfielder Nicole Lamb passed a ball through the Ute defense allowing forward Tara Comfort to steam a break away for a five-yard shot.
The two teams fought through the rest of the first half with a 1-0 score until Ute forward Shauna Gurr brought Utah back into the game. The freshman slammed 15-yard unassisted goal to tie the score 1-1.
The Utes were unable to hold onto the tie however, SMU scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes of play when Comfort scored her second goal of the game on a 35-yard unassisted shot.
The Utes are now 7-4 as they head into Mountain West Conference play Wed., Oct. 6 when the take-on New Mexico. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Ute Soccer Field.
