LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Utah baseball team fell in a wild series opener at Kansas on Thursday night by a 14-12 score at Hoglund Ballpark.
Â
Friday's middle game of this series has been moved up to a 10 a.m. MT first pitch (11 a.m. in Lawrence). It was originally scheduled for the evening, but thunderstorms are expected in the area late Friday.
Â
Utah had a 12-9 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning but the Jayhawks belted four home runs in the frame to take the contest.
Â
Batting out of the six-hole,
Jet Gilliam's five hits were a career-best as Gilliam went 5-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored.
Luke Jacobs had two doubles and homered for the third time this season as part of Jacobs' first four-hit game with the Utah program. He finished a triple short of the cycle.
Matt Flaharty doubled in a 3-for-5 night, driving in a run and scoring twice.
Â
It was the third straight conference game that a Utah player had a multi-home run game. Gilliam accomplished the feat tonight in the footsteps of
Jake Long (Sunday) and
Derek Smith (Saturday).
Â
Each team had 16 hits in the game and the sides combined for 16 extra-base hits on the night.
Â
Jacobs set the table by leading off the game with a solo homer to right field before Gilliam followed in the second inning with a shot that landed in the left field trees. The game continued back-and-forth and reached the sixth inning before neither team scored for the first time.
Â
Trailing 9-7 in the top of the seventh, Gilliam came through with his second home run of the night—tying the score on the heels of a
Cal Miller walk. Three batters later,
Blake Eckerle drove Flaharty home with the go-ahead run on a single that skipped up the middle.
Â
Gilliam earned another RBI in the eighth inning, on a ball that was knocked down by the Kansas pitcher but skipped past the mound. The throw to first base on the play got away, allowing Utah to plate a second run on the play.
Â
Jake Long had his hitting streak come to a close tonight; it reached 21 games and was the longest by a Utah player since 2011.
