PHOENIX – Trailing 12-5 entering the ninth inning, the Utah baseball team pulled off an improbable comeback with an eight-spot to pull in front, but No. 18-ranked Arizona State walked off for a 14-13 final score to even up the series on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Â
Utah (17-14, 6-8 Big 12) still has a chance to win the series as a rubber game awaits the Utes on Sunday.
Â
Jake Long sparked the ninth inning rally effort, leading off with a solo shot for his eighth home run of 2026. Ultimately Utah would bat around in the ninth inning, putting up six hits along the way. Three of the eight runs in the inning came with two outs before Utah took a 13-12 lead.
Â
Overall while trailing, the Utes were down to their last strike five different times.
Â
After Long's homer, the Utes loaded the bases with a walk to
Cameron Gurney, single off
Jet Gilliam's bat and a free pass earned by
Cal Miller.
Nevan Noonan dropped a two-run single into right field as Utah closed within 12-8.
Matt Flaharty was next up and sent the first pitch to right field, scoring Miller from second base and cutting the deficit to just three.
Â
Nine-hole hitter
Derek Smith earned an RBI with his groundout, turning the lineup back over to
Luke Jacobs. On a 2-2 count with two outs, Jacobs sent a squibber to the left side to not only keep the game alive with an infield single but plate Flaharty with Utah's 11
th run.
Â
Long and
Daniel Arambula walked to load the bases yet again, setting the stage for Gurney to come through in the clutch with his first hit of the night, driving in Jacobs and Long to give Utah a 13-12 lead and cap off a 32-minute inning.
Â
Unfortunately for the Utes, PJ Moutzouridis helped Arizona State pull even at 13 with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Sun Devils went on to load the bases and poke a single through the left side to walk off with the victory.
Â
Jacobs homered for the fifth time this season—and the third time to lead off the first inning. Gilliam (3-for-5) scored three times and drove in a run as Gilliam extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Miller (3-for-4) smacked an RBI double, scored two runs and recorded his first collegiate stolen base.
Â
It was Miller's fifth three-hit game and 11
th multi-hit game of his freshman season.
Â
Jacobs kicked off the game with a bang, taking a 3-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for a 435-foot solo homer. The Utes looked to build on the early momentum with Gurney getting into scoring position but he was stranded after stealing second base.
Â
Utah worked a little trickery in the second inning to net its second run. After stealing second base, Miller moved up to third when Flaharty sent a laser through the left side, giving the Utes runners at the corners with one out. Flaharty would later break for second base and got into a rundown, giving Miller the chance to score uncontested.
Â
Two more runs went Utah's way in the top of the third as the Utes chased ASU's starter from the game. Gilliam legged out a two-out single to bring Arambula home, with Gilliam scoring later on from a double off the bat of Miller.
Â
ASU leveled the score with a one-out grand slam in the fourth inning and took its first lead of the series with a three-run homer later in the inning. It gave the Sun Devils a 7-4 advantage and the home squad's first lead of the series.
Â
The Utes had runners in scoring position with nobody out in the sixth, ultimately getting one run back on a sac fly from
Nevan Noonan as the deficit moved to 7-5. Utah loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but came up empty before the Sun Devils had a five-spot in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Six pitchers saw action for the Utes.
Payton Riske started the game on the mound and tossed into the fourth inning before being relieved by
Ryan Kittredge. Kittredge gave the Utes three innings of scoreless, three-hit ball with one strikeout and one walk.
Ian Lenius (2-2) received the loss.
