ATLANTA – The New York Yankees on Monday selected University of Utah shortstop
Core Jackson in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. Picked 164
th overall, Jackson is the 79
th all-time draft selection in Utah's recorded history and third by the Yankees.
Oliver Dunn (2019) was the last Utah alumnus to be selected by the Yankees and Steve Rudanovich was picked by the club in 1965. Jackson is the highest pick of a Utah player since DaShawn Keirsey was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 draft by Minnesota.
In two seasons with Utah, Jackson provided the club a spark at shortstop. He was voted first-team all-conference both in the Pac-12 (2024) and Big 12 (2025), starting all 100 games that he appeared in. He hit .363 in his time with the Utes, tallying 34 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs, 85 RBIs, 112 runs scored.
The Wyoming, Ontario, native concluded his time at Utah on the program's career leaderboards for batting average (9th; .363), OBP (10th; .455) and stolen bases (T-10th; 37). Complementing Jackson's on-field prowess, he graduated with his Bachelor's degree in sociology.
As a senior in 2025 he was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, putting him in the conversation among the nation's top collegiate shortstops. The headliner of the Utah offense slashed .364 / .445 / .641, leading the team in nearly every statistic including all three slash categories. His 61 runs scored are top-10 for a season in Utah history as well as the most during the Power Conference era. He also stole 20 bases, the ninth-most by a Utah player.
During the regular season, Jackson ranked sixth in the Big 12 in batting average, tied for third in runs scored, tied for fourth in doubles (19) and tied for fifth in hits (75). He shined defensively as well, a factor in his placement as the No. 10 shortstop on D1Baseball.com's late-season position rankings for 2025.
Jackson slashed .363 / .463 / .516 in 2024, earning his inaugural first-team all-conference honor. That year, he was tabbed the late-season No. 11 shortstop by D1Baseball.com. He made 52 starts with 15 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 41 RBI, 30 walks and 51 runs scored. His 17 stolen bases ranked second in the Pac-12. He also was among the league leaders in batting average (4
th; .363), OBP (3
rd; .463) and hits (4th; 78). His 26 multi-hit games that year are the second-most in the Power Conference era.
Defensively, Jackson led the league in assists (163) and had a hand in 38 double plays, the fifth-most in the Pac-12. He hit .398 in league play, just short of the top spot.
Jackson's stop at Utah came after he spent the 2023 campaign at South Mountain Community College, contributing a .321 average with 16 doubles, three triples, four homers and 33 RBI. It propelled Jackson to a No. 31 ranking on D1Baseball.com's 2024 preseason list of top Pac-12 prospects. He was at Nebraska for the 2022 season after attending LCCVI in Ontario.
