WACO, Texas – The Utah baseball team fell to Baylor by a 9-0 score in the rubber match of a three-game series on Saturday inside Baylor Ballpark.
Utah was held to two hits on the day.
Jake Long poked a pinch-hit single through the right side in the eighth inning to give the Utes their first knock of the day, then
Kaden Carpenter doubled in the ninth inning.
Cameron Gurney reached base in all three of his plate appearances—via two walks and a Baylor error—while
Derek Smith was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.
Baylor took a quick 1-0 lead in its half of the first inning, leading off with a triple and plating the game's first run on a sac fly. But starter
Dylan Gazaway was unfazed and answered with a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.
The Bears built some padding with a five-run bottom of the fourth, kicking off the frame with a solo homer and adding a grand slam later in the inning. Baylor added single tallies in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Gazaway (1-2) went three-plus innings on the hill with four strikeouts. The Utes had six pitchers see action in the game, including the collegiate debut of freshman southpaw and Meridian, Idaho, native
Colby Chambers.
Chambers' first career strikeout came in the eighth inning.
