BERKELEY, Calif. – The Utah baseball team fell to California by a 9-4 score on Tuesday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Kaden Carpenter and
Core Jackson each had two hits as Utah (11-5) combined for eight as a team. Carpenter doubled and scored a run, while Jackson extended his team-leading hitting streak to 11 games.
Austen Roellig also has now hit safely in 10 straight games.
It was a staff night on the mound for the Utes as seven different pitchers saw action for the team.
California took a first-inning lead with a leadoff single followed by a double down the left field line.
But Utah was quick to answer, getting two across in its half of the second inning. Carpenter slapped a one-out double and would score after two hit batsmen set the stage for a sac fly from
Derek Smith. The lineup then turned back over to
Matt Flaharty, who lifted a two-out RBI single into right field that plated
Jake Long. Later in the inning, the Utes would capitalize on a two-out error that allowed Flaharty to score for the 3-1 advantage.
The long ball helped the Golden Bears pull back in front in the middle innings as California clubbed a three-run home run in the fourth and followed it up with a two-run dinger in the fifth—making the score 6-3 in favor of the home club. Utah's bats quieted down in the middle innings, being held to just two hits between the fourth and sixth frames.
Cal pushed three more across in its half of the eighth as the Golden Bears took advantage of a pair of Utah errors.
The Utes would get one run back in the final inning of the game when Flaharty singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single from Jackson.
Demitri Diamant (0-1) took the loss for Utah.
